How can new insights emerge when artistic and scientific ways of thinking come together? What kinds of questions can be explored through artistic methods?
As part of the Artist-in-Residence Programme of the Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 1225 ISOQUANT, we warmly invite you to participate in the workshop “Artistic Research – When Art and Science Meet” with Beata Anna Schmutz (director and curator at the Nationaltheater Mannheim).
Date: 23–25 September 2026
Format: Three workshop sessions of 4 hours each
23 September 2026 | 10:00–15:00 (including lunch break)
24 September 2026 | 10:00–15:00 (including lunch break)
25 September 2026 | 15:00–19:00 (followed by an informal closing gathering with drinks and snacks)
Please note: The workshop will be conducted in German. Participants should therefore have a basic working knowledge of German that enables them to follow discussions and actively participate in the exercises.
The workshop introduces the principles and methods of Artistic Research, combining scientific inquiry with performative, embodied, and experimental approaches. Together, participants will explore how observation, experimentation, intuition, and artistic practice can open up new perspectives on scientific questions.
The research environment of SFB 1225 ISOQUANT serves as a shared field of exploration. Spaces, materials, conversations, and observations become starting points for artistic experiments and collaborative inquiry. No previous artistic experience is required. The workshop is open to anyone who is curious about experimental ways of working and the dialogue between art and science.
Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, as many of the activities involve movement.
Participation is free of charge, but the number of places is limited.
