From Blog Posts to TikToks: Finding the Right Format for Your Science
Manon Bischoff (Spektrum der Wissenschaft)

Im Neuenheimer Feld 227, 69120 Heidelberg
Science communication comes in many forms – from in-depth articles and personal columns to podcasts, YouTube videos, Reels and TikToks. But which format works best for your research – and for you?
Different formats offer different possibilities. Some allow us to explore complex ideas in depth, others challenge us to distil our message to its essence. Some rely on storytelling through words, others on voice, visuals or personality. Choosing the right format therefore means thinking not only about what we want to communicate, but also about whom we want to reach, what we want to achieve, how much time and resources we have – and how we ourselves feel most comfortable communicating.
Drawing on her own experience as a scientist and science journalist, Manon Bischoff will explore different ways of turning complex scientific ideas into engaging stories. Using examples from articles, columns, podcasts and short-form videos, she will discuss how audience, message, storytelling, level of detail and personal communication style shape the way we talk about science.
The talk invites participants to look beyond the question of how to explain their research and instead ask: What do I want people to take away from my science – and which format can help me tell that story?
The talk is open to all interested university members. No prior registration is required.
